Hvalsey Church ruin is located in the inner part of Hvalsey Fjord, on a lush green meadow, only 30 minutes by boat from Qaqortoq. According to the sagas, it was Eric the Red’s cousin Thorkell Farserk who took possession of the land at Hvalsey. Thorkell was one of the men who came with Eric to Greenland in the year 985 and he probably died as a heathen himself. However, Christianity arrived in Greenland around the year 1000 and soon thereafter the Norse started to build churches at many locations throughout South Greenland. The present church ruin at Hvalsey dates from a later period and is thought to have been built during the 14th century. It is one of the most well-preserved medieval ruins in South Greenland, with thick walls up to 6 m high. On the tour, you will have plenty of time to walk around the historic site and explore the ruins and the peaceful countryside before returning to the bustling town Qaqortoq.

Vi cruiser roligt omkring bræen i en times tid, så du har god mulighed for at tage billeder og opleve storheden fra isen.

De varme kilder

The small island of Uunartoq is located approx. halfway between Qaqortoq and Nanortalik. The spring was known by the Norse, who used the 35-degree Celsius hot water to care and heal sore bodies. Today, the place is visited by both locals and tourists. From the pontoon bridge where you disembark, a path leads up to a small natural pool just 10 meters in diameter. On cold days it evaporates from the warm water surface. Uunartoq is wonderfully pristine and unspoiled compared to many places in Iceland with hot springs, and it is amazing to sit in the warm water and watch the icebergs drifting along on the fjord right next door.

Bådtur til Qooroq Isfjord

We sail from Itilleq to the underwater moraine at the mouth of the Qooroq Ice Fjord. Many icebergs run aground here, forcing us to weave our way among these colossal pieces of ice until we reach the fjord, where we are rewarded with a breathtaking view of thousands of icebergs, sheer cliff faces and an enormous glacier. The glacier calves about 200,000 tons of ice at day into the fjord. Many of these icebergs have a rich turquoise colour. In the fjord, we have time to enjoy the panorama, turn off the engine and drift quietly with the current. The absolute silence is only interrupted by the sound of the distant icebergs as they break free from the glacier front and come crashing down into the fjord. On the trip, we gather ice for our cocktails and listen to the popping sounds as countless, tiny thousand-year-old compressed air bubbles escape from the ice cubes in our glasses.
